If you needed anymore proof of the scale of the DIY artist community then you need to check out this artist. Stromae (Paul Van Haver) is a Belgian/Rwandan singer/songwriter who composed, recorded and released a massive worldwide hit "Allor On Danse". Recorded using Propellerheads Reason it became a massive hit in Europe. Watch how he put the track together.
London girl group The Scarletz attempt to bring reggae back to the charts. Good luck to them. Their debut single "Messed Up" is pretty good, lots of lovely harmonies and it actually has a more contemporary reggae style to it. The girls take their influence from Madness, The Specials and Lily Allen, and while we think that is laudable of them, they should also give some serious listen to some of reggae’s greats like Ken Boothe, Bob Marley, Marcia Griffiths and Aswad. But props to them for setting themselves apart from the rest of the mob let’s hope Island Records pick them up. Pre-order "Messed Up" now.
She’s from the Netherlands and won best Dutch song in 2010 with this smokey, sulty song which just has the ability to put you in a good mood. Her debut album spent 30 weeks at the top of the Dutch album charts beating the record set by Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
The song is released on the Grandmono Label and you can download it right now. So what you waiting for ?
1994 was a fantastic year for pop music. The singles chart was vibrant, it was diverse with
a couple of reggae hits, a novelty football song, Mariah Carey with a brilliant cover song,
and then there was Whigfield. Dance music was already tearing up the charts with a new form
of music, rave music, going mainstream. In the days before Cowell’s domination, there was a
genuine race for the coveted Christmas number one spot. This year it belonged to East 17.
Take That were brilliant and Wet Wet Wet hogged the number one spot forever ! Enjoy a
nostalgic look back at 1994 and don’t forget to bookmark www.myhotmusic.com/myhotmusic.
If Seal was a blue eyed soul singer this is what he would sound like. Songs Of Trees new single "Drifting Apart" is a serious song with a message which is brilliantly sung and conveyed. It is one that deserves a wider audience.
Words cannot describe how much this is a HIT ! Kimbra is a Kiwi based in Melbourne and thanks to Crazed Hits for bringing this to our attention. This should be massive.
I have to say that as a fan of A-ha I was apprehensive about someone attempting to cover
one of their clasic tracks but Color Theory aka Brian Hazard has done a brilliant job so much
so I had to stop listening to it in the car because I would play it so loud it would distract
me when driving.
I suggest a smart a&r person who wants to improve their hit ratio for the year should pick this up.
Crowdfunding is huge and probably the latest trend in the music business. We have had Slicethepie and Sellaband but My Major Company seem to up the bar.
Describing themselves as a proper fully staffed record companies, they have had one act raise £100,000 in a week and another, Some Velvet Morning have raised a third of this in a week.
Seems to bridge the gap between DIY record labels and a traditional label. You can join the site as an investor but not as an artist which sets it apart from Sellaband for example, where you can join as an artist. I think it is interesting and it does give members of the public a more robust platform making their investment less of a risk. Only time will tell if it will catch on.
Watch their manifesto below:
It’s not quite an iPad and it’s bigger than an iPhone but is it any good ? It certainly won’t have any of the Apple apps but it looks pretty good to me.
Ok first of let me admit I have practically avoided Katy Perry’s music due to her constant media attention for anything but the music. Her constant teasing plus her engagement to Russell Brand !!! was too much for me. But after putting all these shenanigans aside I can say she is the top female artist at the moment, forget about Lady Gaga it’s all about Katy now.
